Chadar Ice Trek
The ultimate adventure! For just a few weeks each winter, the people of the remote Zanskar valley are able to make their way to Ladakh's capitl of Leh by following the frozen Zanskar river from their mountain stronghold to its confluence with the Indus river.

This year we have received a special invitation to accompany one intrepid group on this epic journey through the stark winter landscape. From Padum, the capitol of Zanskar, a spectacular flight by helicopter over the main Himalaya range takes us to Manali. This is not a journey for everyone, but for those with a Himalayan-sized of adventure, it is truly one of the world's greatest journeys. Group size is limited to six.

Detailed Itinerary

PRE TREK

Day 01 : Arrive Leh. Met upon and transfer to hotel.

Day 02 : At leisure in Leh.

Day 03 : At leisure in Leh.



ACTUAL TREK
Day 04 : Leh - Sumdah do - Drive.
To begin with, the road follows the Indus River for an hour to the confluence with the Zanskar River. The road then follows this to the village of Sumdah Do. From here we trek for an hour on and off the frozen river to the village of Chilling. Overnight camp.

Day 05 : Trek Up The Frozen River.
For the next five Days we trek up the Frozen River through gorges and deep valleys. There are a number of choices for camp sites and therefore during this time we can make our itinerary as flexible as we like. There are also many caves( Bawo ) which can be used for camping.


Trek Chilling to Dakmar Bawo Camp

Day 06 : Trek Dakmar Bawo To Tib Bawo Camp

Day 07 : Trek Tib Bawo To Nayektse Bawo Camp

Day 08 : Trek Nayektse Bawo to Wamay Bawo Camp.

Day 09 : Wamay Bawo to Zangla Village
Stay in a village house. The previous evening we could find accommodation in one of the other villages closeby to the Zanskar River, namely Hanamur or Pidmu.

Day 10 : Trek Zangla to Stondey
This trek passes through the village of Zozar. Shortly after leaving Zangla we will see the largest of the strange bridges made from interwoven twigs that are unusual but a common sight in Zanskar. The gorge also is now left behind and we enter the large lane leading to Padum. There is a very large and active monastery above the village which we will visit.

Day 11 : Trek Stondey to Padum (5-6 Hrs)
Again we could be offered accommodation in the township itself, though there is a tourist bungalow complex, however it is likely to be closed for the winter.

POST TREK
Day 12 : At Leisure in Padam
Explore and experience the winter life in this remote village of Zanskar.

Day 13 : Drive to Kargil. Overnight in hotel.

Day 14 : Drive to Leh

Day 15 : Fly Leh - Delhi.
